I enjoyed this story! There was something noir-ish about it; I kept visualizing it as a black-and-white movie or graphic novel.

Your interpretation is interesting to me. I felt the resignation was effective in light of the fact that none of us can escape death. Even if the narrator had done all the things you suggest—acting with more intention and self-regard—the Pale Man would still have eventually come for him. Have you seen It Follows? The oppressive advance of the villain in this story reminded me of that film.

At first, I thought it would be like a serial killer stalking his victims in hotels, or that someone had paid to kill the protagonist. And I understand the idea you're suggesting about fighting and not giving up; but sometimes, that fight can bring more fatigue and sadness, and nothing would be achieved anyway. It's interesting that the "man" is "pale," as it also denotes a lack of spirit, enthusiasm, or passion...in this case, the protagonist's entire life 🌷🌹.
