For me, the power of horror is always in what's suggested rather than shown, and this story is a memorable example of that. Your analysis is detailed and thoughtful! Half the fun of enjoying a new piece of media is reading a smart review. Thank you for that. What stood out most to me in this story is the powerful imagery—the fevered sketch session and the resulting work, Atkinson's expression of collapse, the moment of seeing one's own name on a gravestone, the sharpening of the chisel in the smoky, hot, dark upstairs room. I wish I could see this as an episode of Cabinet of Curiosities or LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS.

I loved your analysis, and the story too. I think this time, the character has no escape; he made the choices along the way that led him to that place. He even endured the food and had to feign admiration for something he clearly didn't like. The story has a subtle way of indicating what's going to happen, but at the same time being direct about it. Without saying it, we know who will be the man who will go crazy due to the heat.
