Hello fellow deepreaders. Our next read will be an unexpected tale from Lovecraft that isn't spoken of so much, but that I love.
You can read the tale here.

Here at short story club, we read the best tales and dissect them as a group. What themes did we find? How did the writer achieve their goals? That sort of thing. It's free, too!
I'll post my thoughts in a week's time and we can discuss it then.
May your shadow never grow less,

Very good, and the typical Lovecraftian lov and respect for the written word!! I wonder if this was perhaps a fragment, intended to be a part of a longer story that he never fully developed. So many parts of it remind me of ingredients from some of his other stories, and even a tiny bit of Casting the Runes and the Hounds of Tindalos and even a touch of the House on the Borderlands! ( which was made into a rather good animated short on YT ) Altogether, a lot of story, sending the reader's mind into several directions and dimensions - in so few words!
Sorry, Julian, I forgot to get back to you on this. As you mention, it was indeed a story that he ditched, so no doubt it was leading somewhere more sinister.
For me, it was a timely reminder of the power of stories. And it's very brief. I will have to check out that animation you mention.
